the hotel limpia
fort davis, tx
“With an elevation of 5,000 feet above sea level, Fort Davis basks in a season all its own during what are known as dog days in other, less lofty locales. This hybrid season of warm spring rains and cool autumn nights makes the region an ideal destination to escape the last of summer’s heat.”
—Texas Highways
The Hotel Limpia, named after the clear waters of Limpia Creek that wind through the valleys of the Davis Mountains, was built in 1912. It quickly became a popular summer destination for Texans seeking sanctuary in the cooler alpine climate. Just down the road from the McDonald Observatory and situated in a protected dark zone, it has long been a center for astrological observation, and housed Harvard University astronomers for over two decades.
Byways completed the purchase of the hotel in 2024, and plan to renovate the rooms, restaurant, pool, and ballroom to serve stargazers for the next hundred years.
